Introduction
Lexia ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect when you use the Lexia web platform, iOS app, or Android app (together, "the service"), how we use it, and your rights regarding that data.
The iOS app
What data the app collects
The Lexia iOS app is designed to work without an account and without sending personal data to our servers.
- Books and reading content: Built-in books ship with the app. Any EPUB files you import are converted into .lexia files entirely on your device. They are never uploaded to our servers.
- Reading progress: Your position within each book is stored locally on your device using Apple's Core Data framework. This data stays on your device unless you enable iCloud backup.
- No account required: The app does not require you to create an account or provide any personal information.
iCloud backup
If you have iCloud backup enabled, Apple may back up your app data as part of your standard device backup. This is controlled by your iOS settings and is subject to Apple's Privacy Policy. We do not have access to your iCloud data.
No analytics or tracking in the iOS app
The Lexia iOS app does not include any analytics SDKs, advertising identifiers, or third-party tracking. We do not collect crash reports or usage statistics from the app.
The Android app
What the Android app does
The Lexia Android app loads the Lexia web platform (lexiareader.com) inside a native app shell. It does not collect any additional data beyond what the web platform collects when you use it in a browser.
- No account required to browse: You can read public library books without creating an account.
- Account features: If you log in or register, the same data described in the "Web platform" section below applies.
- Local storage: Reading preferences (font, theme, text size) are stored locally on your device using the browser's localStorage. This data never leaves your device.
- Internet connection required: The Android app requires an active internet connection to function. No content is stored offline.
No analytics or tracking in the Android app
The Android app shell itself does not include any analytics SDKs, advertising identifiers, or third-party tracking beyond what is present on the web platform.
The web platform
Information you provide
- Account details: When you register, we collect your email address and a hashed password. We never store your password in plain text.
- Books and reading content: EPUB files you upload are processed on our servers to create .lexia files. The resulting files are stored in your account library. Original EPUB files are deleted after processing.
- Reading progress: Your current reading position within each book is saved to your account so you can resume where you left off on the web.
Automatically collected information
- Activity logs: We log certain actions (such as book conversions and downloads) for security and service improvement purposes. Logs are not shared with third parties.
- Session data: Standard session cookies are used to keep you logged in. No cross-site tracking cookies are used.
- Analytics data: We use Google Analytics 4 to collect anonymised information about how visitors use the site, such as pages visited, time on site, and general location (country/region). This data is aggregated and does not identify you personally. You can opt out using the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
How we use your information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide and maintain your Lexia account and web library
- Process EPUB files and create .lexia reading files
- Save and restore your reading progress on the web platform
- Send account-related emails (e.g. email verification)
- Improve and optimise the service
- Ensure the security and integrity of the platform
Data storage and security
Web platform account data and .lexia files are stored on our servers. We implement appropriate technical and organisational security measures to protect your information. However, no method of electronic storage is 100% secure.
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for marketing purposes.
Third-party services
Google Analytics (web only)
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use the site. Google Analytics sets cookies to collect anonymised usage data. This is subject to Google's Privacy Policy. IP addresses are anonymised before being stored by Google.
Email delivery (web only)
Transactional emails (such as account verification) are sent via a third-party email delivery service. Only your email address is shared for this purpose.
Data retention
App data is stored locally on your device and is under your control. Web platform account data is retained for as long as your account is active. You can request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time by contacting us.
Children's privacy
Lexia is suitable for users of all ages. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us immediately.
