What is focussed reading?
Lexia presents text in small, meaningful chunks rather than full paragraphs. This reduces visual overwhelm, helps readers with dyslexia or ADHD stay on track, and lets you absorb what you're reading rather than scanning over it.
Each chunk is short enough to take in at a glance. With practice, you'll find you can read faster and retain more.
Getting into the rhythm
As you read each chunk, try to:
- Take in the whole chunk at once rather than reading word by word
- Visualise what's being described
- Feel the emotion in the text
It takes a few pages to settle in, but most readers find it clicks quickly.
Using the reader
| Tap or click | Advance to next chunk |
| Double-tap or double-click | Hide or show the navigation bars |
| Back/forward buttons | Move one chunk at a time |
| Skip buttons (« ») | Jump 10 chunks at a time |
| Chapter dropdown | Jump to any chapter |
| Play button | Auto-advance at your chosen reading speed |
| Bookmark button | Save your current position |
| Settings button | Adjust font, size, brightness and background colour |
The reader moves between chapters automatically, so you can read from start to finish without interruption.
A soft purple gradient at the top of the reading area marks the start of a new paragraph — a gentle visual cue that a new thought has begun, without interrupting your flow.
Customising your reading experience
Tap the settings icon in the top right of the reader to adjust:
- Font size. Make text as large or small as you like.
- Brightness. Reduce eye strain in low light.
- Background colour. Choose from white, yellow, cream, blue, green or pink. Coloured backgrounds can help readers with dyslexia or visual stress.
- Font. System, Serif, Lora or Atkinson Hyperlegible.
Your settings are saved in your browser and carry across pages automatically.
Adding books
Log in and go to Add book. You can:
- Convert an EPUB. Upload any EPUB file and Lexia will process it into chunks automatically.
- Import a .lexia file. If you have a book exported from the iOS app, you can import it directly.
Processing usually takes a minute or two depending on the length of the book.
iOS and Android apps
Lexia is also available as an iOS app, with Apple Watch support. An Android app is coming soon.
Books you process on the web can be exported as .lexia files and imported into the app, and vice versa.
Getting started
- Browse the library to try a pre-processed book.
- Create an account to save your own books.
- Upload an EPUB from Add book.
- Open your book and adjust the settings to suit you.
